emergency The Heimlich Maneuver was introduced in 1974. This revolutionary technique clears the airways of a choking person by applying upward pressure on the diaphragm. It was developed by Dr. Henry Heimlich and was immediately endorsed by the American Red Cross.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was first taught to medical personnel in 1960, and was formally adopted by the American Heart Association in 1963. The use of CPR in emergencies became common during the 1970s.
Dialing 911 in an emergency was first proposed in 1967 and put into operation in 1968. As convenient as it was, a 1974 study found that most people were still reluctant to use it. They were afraid their emergencies weren't "urgent" enough.
drug use Once confined to the counterculture, drug use became a mainstream problem in the 1970s. Quaaludes, heroin, speed and Angel Dust (a mixture of animal tranquilizer and heroin) were the hot new drugs. The use of cocaine in trendy nightspots made it the glamour drug. Marijuana use filtered down to high school students and was a source of humor for comedians like Cheech & Chong.

relationships *Gays and lesbians began coming out of the closet.
*Between 1970 and 1977, the number of unmarried couples living together nearly doubled. While this was a huge increase, it still accounted for less than one percent of all American households.
*Young people found partners at singles bars, singles clubs and through computer dating services.
*Before AIDS, herpes was the biggest health threat facing sexually active couples. There was (and still is) no cure for this disease. Like they say, "The only difference between love and herpes is that herpes lasts forever."
marriage *Between 1970 and 1977, the number of interracial marriages increased by 36 percent.
*The grooviest married couples were swingers. At wife-swapping parties, your bed partner for the night was determined by dumping everyone's car keys into a large bowl and drawing them at random.
*Our attitudes were changing in the 1970s, and getting married was no longer a high priority for many young people. This was especially true for women, who were encouraged to pursue careers and no longer felt pressured to marry at a young age. In 1975, half of all Americans aged 20 to 24 were still single, many of them by choice.

home shopping
In the 1970s, there were three ways to shop at home....
- ordering from a catalog: We bought clothing, housewares and gifts from catalog giants like Sears, Wards, Penney's, Spiegel and McDade's. Each December, our Christmas lists were compiled from the pages of the holiday wishbook.
- home demonstration parties: Time for some cake, coffee and gossip, plus a chance to purchase products from Tupperware, Mary Kay and Sarah Coventry.
- ordering from TV: But wait....there's more! Call the number on your screen to order that home gadget or record album. Not sold in stores! Call now, operators are waiting!

Although they never disappeared completely, most stores and gas stations stopped giving out trading stamps in the 1970s because of the poor economy.
environmental issues The modern environmental movement was launched in the late 1960s. By the early 1970s, political action groups and public service announcements were focusing on issues like pollution, wildlife preservation and the need for alternative forms of energy.
*Woodsy Owl said, "Give a hoot, don't pollute!"
*Americans discovered the benefits of solar power and recycling.
*In 1970, the first Earth Day celebration was known as the First National Environmental Teach-In. All across the country, environmental issues were the focus of various events and activities.
*Congress passed the endangered species act in 1973, which bans trade in endangered wildlife and protects animal species determined to be at risk.
*In 1971, the environmental action group known as Greenpeace was formed in Canada as the Don't Make A Wave Committee. Their name was changed to Greenpeace in 1975.

*Many young people joined cults in the 1970s. For alienated youth, these religious groups provided a very strong sense of belonging. Concerned parents "kidnapped" their children from the cults and hired professionals to de-program them.

Change was in the air for students in the 1970s.
goodbye Dick & Jane The Dick & Jane readers were retired in 1970 after nearly 40 years of use. Our new reading books were bright and colorful, with updated stories and characters who were more ethnically and economically diverse.
no more dress codes Throughout the 1960s, school dress codes were strictly enforced. In the 1970s, casual clothing was becoming more acceptable, and dress codes were relaxed and ultimately banished altogether.
new ideas Times were changing, and many schools were trying new ideas. At the grade school level, they included team teaching, unstructured open classrooms and modular cubbies in place of traditional desks. High schools experimented with open campus, student lounges and outdoor student smoking areas.
Title IX Title IX prohibited gender discrimination in public schools. It was signed into law by President Nixon in 1972 and was fully implemented by 1978.
- Girls were given equal opportunity to participate in sports.
- Class choice was no longer dictated by gender. Boys could take cooking and sewing classes, and girls could take shop classes. All class titles were required to be gender neutral.
- Colleges could not reject applicants because of marital status or gender, and high schools could not expel students because of pregnancy.
Title IX Overview School Integration In Boston School Busing 25 Years Later Show Choir
forced busing Many cities tried to balance the racial mix and enforce desegregation by busing students to schools far away from home. This did not go over very well and resulted in many riots, especially in Boston.
show choir In the early 1970s, the show choir brought the sounds of contemporary music to our high schools. Also known as a swing choir, this select group of students performed rock and show tunes with choreography. Musical accompaniment was usually provided by a small instrumental combo. In most schools, the swing choir was an extra-curricular activity with membership determined by audition. In my high school, the swing choir performed music from Jesus Christ Superstar, The Wiz and A Chorus Line, plus music by the Doobie Brothers and the Manhattan Transfer.
